No prophet is without honor, except in his own organization

A classic Dilbert moment: You tell your boss what should be done to improve something. Boss nods and says little. Time goes by and nothing is done about it. You mention it a couple of times, to co-workers and your boss again. Everybody thinks it is a good idea… but it is not done.

Being a proactive and caring employee, you may have been in this (or similar) situation quite a few times. Then how come it takes an external consultant, or a new overpaid employee, to come and say the same things you have noticed for a long time, for managers or directors to take notice? I call it the “No Prophet is without honor, save in his own Company” effect. It seems to be a law. I do not know exactly what causes it. It is deduced out of empirical observation, but it doesn’t fail.

So, assuming that this is part of the nature of jobs, I have decided that one of the most effective steps in advancing in a career is to switch jobs every once in a while. Not just for the motivation of the new challenges (Oops, look at that, it might be part of the equation), but simply because, when you come from “the outside” your comment will be taken more into account, and more often.
