A new project aims to emulate Google Apps functionality using available Open Source projects. The idea is to bring popular projects to collaborate on common standards, to make their apps interoperate, and to finally make a single downloadable package with easy installation.

You can tell it’s a newly born project just by visiting its site. But it is a good thing that projects of this sort are already on the way.

Google Apps are an excellent tool, but lack only one thing: they are not Open Source. We don’t know if Google would ever make them open source, but it sure could take a long while. So, in the mean time, a project like this could be a good things for many organizations that love google apps functionality, but would like to have the system hosted in-house.

What are your thoughts on this project? Does it look like the next Linux?

Are there any business opportunities in the area of google apps. As in, is it possible to build open source software around google apps and then make money?

    Hello H. Nasir.

Of course there are business opportunities around it. A recent poll at Read/WriteWeb revealed Google Apps are the most widely used Web Office.

What would prevent you from building such OS apps?

Thank your Conradov for your answer.

Firstly, how do I win the credibility of users who have complete trust and faith in google.

Secondly, if I create an open source application that works complimentary to Google Apps, then what would keep Google from taking my source code and reselling it under their name without having to give me anything.

I am sorry for sounding greedy.

    You’re welcome.

About credibility: Many users do not have 100% complete trust and faith in Google, but would use it nevertheless. Having well written Privacy Policy and Terms of Service notes linked at the footer of every page of your site will help your credibility a lot. But the most important credibility token is a link from a trusted source (A popular blog, news site, etc.)

About Google “stealing” your idea: it certainly is a risk. But chances are that if you came up with the idea, someone else already did too. The two important and valuable things here are execution and user base. Those are the hard things to build, and what Google buys when it buys a start-up.

    You don’t sound greedy H.
