Godaddy has more than just technical problems

Yesterday, while surfing the Web and blogging, I came aware that this site, as most of the sites I host with GoDaddy.com, Inc., were down. It took them over an hour to fix the problems, at least for my sites. We had an online discussion at the DigitalPoint Forums during the problem, where other users noted they were having troubles too.

GoDaddy’s support phone number had a recorded message saying they were aware of the problems, and were working to fix it. I went to their site and noticed this sign:

godaddy page

Then I sent them an e-mail, which they answered today in the following manner:

Dear Conrado Vina,

Thank you for contacting Online Support.

Unfortunately we are unable to duplicate the issue as your sites are currectly up and running properly. In order to proceed further with this issue we will need you to reply with a screenshot showing the error you receive along with the steps taken. I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused. How Capture a Screen Shot in Windows:

The term screen shot refers to “grabbing” a still image of the contents of your computer monitor that can be saved as a graphic file and printed, faxed, or emailed.

Screen shots are very helpful in explaining what you are seeing on your computer when working with customer support. It is often easier for you and for the support representative if you take a screen shot of what you are seeing and simply send it in.

Here is a quick step by step on how to do it:

In Windows, taking a screenshot is done by pressing the Print Screen key on your keyboard. On most standard keyboards, it is found to the right of the F12 key in the upper right hand portion of the keyboard. When this key is pressed, Windows takes a snapshot of the current contents of the screen and saves it to the Windows Clipboard.

If you want to take a screenshot of just the active window, make sure to click once on the window you are working with, then hold down the Alt key and press Print Screen. This will send the contents of the active window to the Clipboard.

You will then need to save the image to an image editor. You can use any software that you feel comfortable with. An easy to use, freeware program that you can use is called IRFAN VIEW (www.irfanview.com). You can download this program and run it on your computer free of charge.

If you don’t have an image editor, you can find Microsoft Paint installed on almost every computer that runs Windows. It is usually available from the Start menu by clicking START, Programs, Accessories, Paint.

Once you’ve opened your image editor, click on the Edit menu and choose Paste. The Screen Shot will be dropped into the image editor for you to save. Click on the File menu, and then choose Save to save it as a file in the graphics format of your choice. The best file type to use for saving screenshots is .gif (if your software allows it).

Now that you have the file saved, you can attach it to an email to our support forum. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Daniel P.

Three of my sites are down. What is the problem?

The domains with problems (all hosted with the same delux account) are:

methegeek.com
onfleet.net
theoserp.com

So, instead of acknowledging the problem - they already knew were having - they play the “where’s the problem, I don’t see it” game after fixing it, one day later. Quite silly if you ask me.

Bob Parson might be a cool guy, and I am among the crowd that likes his TV ads, but his company’s service does have serious issues.

Unfortunately, I already read several warnings here, here, here, and here to reference just a few of the bad reviews Godaddy gets.

So I am going to start switching to another host, maybe paying very few bucks more if any, of the thousands that get better reviews. I just hope GoDaddy doesn’t take my service down, as they did with this guys, and save me a headache. They probably won’t, since they should be aware they might be getting a bit too much bad publicity already. I already backed up the sites anyway, just in case.

Not quite sure what happened with Godaddy. However, I use UltraDNS (Neustar Ultra Services) because they are the best providers out there. They have the most secure DNS infrastructure and have never gone down. The guy I know at Ultra is James. He’s a great rep and doesn’t mind people emailing him all day. Feel free to contact him. Thank you Paul. I will consider them. I already know what happened; they got whacked by a DDoS attack.
