Online Office Suites: the next big thing

Read/Write Web (excellent site I forgot to mention on the March favourites post) announced the launch of yet another Online Office Suite. It now stands aside Zoho, ThinkFree, Zimbra and the much praised Google Docs.

Jim Lynch has a great article explaining why he switched from OpenOffice to Google Docs. He narrates almost my exact same situation, and puts the same reasons I would give to justify the switch.

So what is the main reason for the success of this Web 2.0 products?

Availability

The reason to prefer Google docs over desktop editors is that you forget about storage: you just have it wherever you have an Internet connection.

The other great thing is that you do not need to install anything on your system. So you get a PC with any browser and you have your document waiting for you right there. It is as easy as it gets.

What is not to like of these services?

Terms of Service

As noted in the Read/Write Web post and comments, the main reason holding back mass adoption is that you have to trust the third party company to keep your documents safe and respect -and assure- your privacy.

Many companies just won’t trust them. They will want the documents in house. That is the big opportunity for the Open Source alternatives. We are already three members at OpenGoo. But that is a story for another post.

Very true about the storage concern. But speed is also a main issue. I would personally rate Google Docs a bit slower in speed, than other, more comprehensive and complete solutions like edeskonline. Since security is assured by all providers, security with speed plays an important role. It also has an online Accounting Package and Tax Calculator on https://www.edeskonline.com/index_online_office.asp
