As a follow up on my little contribution to Firefox’s marketing stating that you are more likely to earn more and feel younger by using Firefox, I am promoting Thunderbird now.

Thunderbird

Even though it is not the first time - and won’t be the last - I promote Thunderbird, some recent events are motivating me.

Thunderbird 2.0 rc1 released

Thunderbird 2.0 first release candidate (RC1) was just released, and the 2.0 final release is very close.

Among the many new features, the most notable would be:

  • Message tags
  • Improved search
  • Advanced folder views
  • Session History Navigation
  • Improved New Mail Notification Alerts
  • Better integration with Gmail and .Mac

And specially:

  • Updates to the Extension System

If you want to read more about the new features, you could check out the Thunderbird 2 Release Notes or the excellent Thunderbird review at Read/WriteWeb.

Calendar: Auto Sync with Google Calendar

The great advantage of Firefox’s little brother is in the shared genes: the add-ons. And the one add-on that I was most concerned with, just got amazing.

I found this Google Calendar and Thunderbird sync howto [via lifehacker] that details every step for setting this auto-sync between Google Calendar and Thunderbird.

Why is this great? Well, most of the arguments I’ve heard against Thunderbird were the not-so-good calendar. Now it will be the best.

There are only two drawbacks that us geeks found: it only works offline, and it doesn’t support recurring events.

Final thoughts and a funny note

I have been using T2.0 since the first beta, and I didn’t have any problems but the recurring Junk Messages not moving to the Junk Folder issue in one installation I did. This bug is not such a big deal and I can live with it until they come up with a definitive solution. I bet they are working hard on it.

I’m also sure the drawbacks mentioned for the Calendar synced with Google are quickly going to be solved.

So, with the 2.0 release, I will proclaim Thunderbird a mature and complete desktop e-mail client. And it comes at the best price (free!). And is standards compliant. And it works with linux. And hast a great spam filter. And it makes easy to spell-check your messages (in any language).

The funny offtopic note: I wrote this post seeing the howto making its way to the front page of digg, from 23 to 37, 38, 39 diggs. It is a sure shot!
