Why do people buy disposable soda bottles?

I was shopping at the grocery store today and a rhetorical question I made myself many times came back to me again:

Why do people buy disposable soda (coke) bottles?

I don’t know how the matter is treated in other countries, but here, a coke in a returnable bottle

  • is around 20% cheaper than the same amount sold in a disposable bottle
  • and, obviously, it hurts the environment much less, right?

All you have to do is take the bottles with you some future time you go back to the store. Still, I see most people buying disposable.

So why is this happening? Is that the average level of unconsciousness, is it just me, or is there something I am missing?

Actually, i’m not so sure disposables hurt the environment much less.

Returnables bottles are reused decreasing the amount of plastic needed, and thus the amount of oil needed.

The difference must be somewhere else, probably in the place/cost of production of these bottles. The returnables look more expensive to me, and they are probably made in Uruguay, while the others may be imported from somewhere else. But i’m just guessing here.

Interesting Gabo. But I did not understand your explanation of how returnables could hurt the environment more.
