Google is starting to roll out a new feature for Gmail that allows the users to view attached Power Point presentations on-line. This is clearly part of ‘Presently’; Google’s take on PowerPoint. Last post was, unfortunately, a false alarm, as Ioannus pointed out in the comments.

At first glance, the feature might not impress much, and to some it might feel a little disappointing. But one of the hidden benefits is the empowering of non Microsoft users (if this does work in Linux, which I haven’t tested yet… I don’t have the feature in my account). Having yet another alternative to watch ppt presentations (OpenOffice.org is another one) will eventually force presentation producers to adhere to some standards, if not for the documents format, at least for quality. ‘Your ppt doesn’t look good on my gmail’ is surely going to be another bit of help for standardization and cross-platform awareness.

The first report seems to be from this site in Spanish.
There is a good report of the news in English at Google Blogoscoped.
