Pandora: a nice company fatally wounded by nonsense politics

Pandora has been getting a lot of press this past weeks over its new services. They have signed deals with USA mobile providers Sprint and Sonos, and have revamped their Web Site.

All that development is quite impressive, but to me it still feels like the company is doomed. And it all has to do -obviously- with the blocking of foreign users (that now includes Canada). In the remote possibility that the service is restored in some countries, the opportunity for competitors was already open. Past users (I am one) are probably not going back to their service, and are probably going to recommend the service they will currently be using. Unless, of course, Pandora’s new service is much better. But, sadly, I don’t think that will be the case.

As you can see in the Alexa charts, Pandora traffic is decreasing fast, while top competitor, Last.fm (thanks to commenter Mark Trontom for the tip) is healthy growing.

Pandora vs Last.fm

The first time I tried Last.fm it was slow on my machine. But I gave it a second try, and have been enjoying it for a couple of weeks now. It works great, just like Pandora did.

So for a service that, even with recently added mobile services, will probably rely mainly on visitors traffic for success, foreign traffic lost will be a big wound. Pandora took every step politically correct, and might cause them to lose ground. To my feelings, they helped prove that the way music is commercialized is wrong. I just hope that doesn’t cost them their business.

To read about Pandora’s new services, there are good articles about it at TechCrunch.
