The Web 3.0 platform

So, what do you think will be the platform for Web 3.0? (Yes, I know, I’m such an original guy…)

Ok, but the question is still relevant. Do you think it will be:

    • Something Else
  • The 3.0 Platform

More than just voting, it would be nice to leave your comments.

BTW, my vote went to JavaFX. There are several posts on the blog explaining my why.

Oh, and maybe it’s Web 2.1… yeah, that sounds better.

I think it will be some truly open and free technology. And JavaFX which is licensed under the GPL license looks like the best choice to me.

JavaFX is never going to take off in any circles other than the Java community.

Personally I’m not a Java fan, but with all the other technologies coming out I just don’t see JavaFX gaining any traction.

I noticed you didn’t put Apollo up there. I’m pretty sure that’s different that Flex.

I think Flash will continue to be a strong contender in the industry and I see Silverlight gaining some momentum just because it’s got a lot of money and a large developer base behnind it.

More than anything though will be more creative uses of AJAX and JavaScript with better cross-browser support and new improvements to the JavaScript language - The Lingua franca of the web.

Hi Tsiolkovsky. You summed up pretty well what I think. Why did I need so many words to say that?

Web 3.0 is a long way off, but i think it may be based on Java conceptually at least - virtual machines for embedded architecture, regardless of hardware. To exchange data ambiently with the environment and others will involve more code than HTML, XML, etc is capable of. Maybe.

      Hi Ryan,

Yes, I just checked Adobe’s site to refresh my understanding of their offerings. Apollo (Now called AIR), in the words of Adobe’s PR “is a cross-operating system runtime that allows developers to use their existing web development skills to build and deploy rich Internet applications to the desktop”.

It integrates Flex as part of it. I propose to assume Adobe as one contender (Flex~AIR). But you got me thinking… what about Google gears? Should we include it too?

Plus I left out Mozilla’s XUL too… and nobody’s complaining yet.

Now maybe the first poll should have been: Do we need a different abstraction from the OS other than the Browser?

      Microsoft just released Silverlight 1.0.

The interesting bit: they say it works with Linux!

Honestly I think it’ll be a bunch of technologies. Just as today’s desktop apps are written in VB, Apple Basic, C, Delphi, C++, FoxPro, and other languages, I don’t think “Web 3.0″ will be a single technology. Instead, I feel things will stay heterogenous.
